The Medeu Oil Field Development represents one of TOO “KGNG Refinery“’s flagship upstream projects and a key milestone in Kazakhstan’s energy sector. Launched shortly after the company’s founding in 2016, the project is located in the Medeusky District of Almaty, a region with significant untapped hydrocarbon potential.

Project Scope & Objective

The primary goal of this project was to establish a sustainable and efficient oil production operation from a previously underexplored basin. This included full-cycle exploration, drilling, infrastructure development, and long-term reservoir management planning.

Exploration & Geological Survey

Our exploration activities began with detailed geological mapping and seismic acquisition (2D/3D surveys) to delineate potential hydrocarbon-bearing structures. We utilized advanced geophysical modeling software to interpret subsurface data, identifying multiple promising reservoirs.

Key highlights:

  • Seismic imaging revealed multi-zone formations with commercial oil potential.

  • Magnetic and gravity surveys were conducted to confirm subsurface anomalies.

  • Comprehensive environmental baseline studies were completed before field activity.

Drilling & Production

Following exploration, multiple appraisal wells were drilled to confirm reservoir quality, depth, and pressure. We deployed directional drilling and mud-logging technologies to maximize accuracy and minimize environmental footprint.

  • First oil was successfully achieved within targeted timelines.

  • Reservoir testing showed stable production rates with low water cut.

  • Production facilities were built with scalability for future expansion.

Infrastructure & Facilities

To support ongoing operations, we developed essential field infrastructure, including:

  • Crude oil storage tanks and separators

  • Pipeline interconnects for regional transport

  • Road access and power supply systems

  • Operational and safety control centers

  • Fire suppression and emergency response units

All infrastructure was designed in compliance with Kazakh regulatory standards and international HSE protocols.

Environmental & Community Engagement

TOO “KGNG Refinery” prioritized environmental responsibility and stakeholder engagement. We conducted a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and maintained continuous dialogue with local authorities and communities.

Sustainability initiatives included:

  • Zero-flaring policies via gas reinjection systems

  • Groundwater protection and spill containment

  • Employment and training programs for local residents
